Kutajarishta; Uses/ Indications, Dosage, Side Effects

Kutajarishta is a liquid Ayurvedic medicine, used in the treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, IBS etc. It contains 5 – 10 % of self-generated alcohol in it. This self-generated alcohol and the water present in the product acts as a media to deliver water and alcohol soluble the active herbal components to the body. It is effective in chronic dysentery associated with mucus, abdominal pain, fever, anorexia, and tenesmus
In chronic dysentery, it should be continued for a longer period to prevent the relapse
Effective in cases of irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis

Kutajarishta ingredients

  • Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica)- Stem bark – 4.8 kg
  • Mridveeka – Dry grapes – 2.8 kg
  • Madhuka (Madhuca indica) – FLower – 480 g
  • Kashmari (Gmelina arborea) – Stem bark / root – 480 g
  • water for Kashayam – 49.152 kg, boiled and reduced to 21.288 liters
  • Guda – Jaggery – 4.8 kg
  • Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa) – flower – 960 g

Method of manufacturing

  • Coarse powder of first four herbs is made, added with water, boiled to make Kashaya, reduced to specified quantity and filtered. To it, jaggery is added and dissolved, filtered and then Dhataki is added.
  • Kept closed in a clean airtight container for one month time period for fermentation.
    After a month, it is taken out, filtered and preserved.

Uses of Kutajarishta

  • IBS, Chronic dysentery, diarrhea
  • Kutajarishta is widely used in Ayurvedic treatment for diarrhea, dysentery, fever, bleeding disorders of intestine irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, hemorrhoids. Strengthens digestive power.
  • Doctors also use this for the treatment of
    Diarrhea, dysentery and Irritable bowel syndrome associated with antibiotic usage.
  • Sarva Jvara – It is useful in all types of fever.
  • Grahani – useful in irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption syndrome
  • Raktatisara – useful in diarrhea/ dysentery with bleeding, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis etc.
  • Drink plenty of water. Yogurt, rice, potato, blueberry, fenugreek seeds.
  • It treats diarrhoea.
  • It can also heal dysentery.
  • This formulation treats flatulence.
  • It can treat bronchitis.
  • It provides relief from cough.
  • This medicine also gets rid of intestinal worms.
  • It boosts overall digestive strength.
  • It also helps heal from fever.
  • Avoid milk and dairy products, bran, cauliflower, cabbage, berries, green leafy vegetables, Celery, squash, beans. beans, mushroom oranges.

Diarrhea

  • Kutajarishta is likely to reduce the intestinal motility, which helps in the treatment of diarrhea. (rx) Kutajarishta also has antimicrobial properties. In clinical observation, it is effective in diarrhea occurring due to contaminated food or water. Kutajarishta reduces the frequency of loose stools. It should not be given in the initial stage of diarrhea because one should let the elimination of toxins from the body.

Amebic Dysentery

  • Kutaj in Kutajarishta has studied for Amebic Dysentery, which occurs due to Entamoeba histolytica. Kutaj kills E. histolytica and clears it from the intestines and liver. Approximate 70% good results are found in improvement in symptoms like flatulence, loose stools, mucus in the stool, and tenesmus. (rx)
  • Kutajarishta is likely to exert the same action and have similar benefits like its main ingredient. However, alone use of Kutajarishta is not suggestible, so other ayurvedic remedies should also be administrated for better results.

Shigella Infection (Shigellosis)

  • Kutajarishta like its ingredient contains CONESSINE and CONIMINE active constituents, which inhibits the growth of Shigella bacteria strains. (rxrx)
  • The stem bark of Kutaj is used for preparing Kutajarishta, which has bacteriostatic and bactericidal action against Shigella Soneii, Shigella Boydii and Shigella Flexneri. (rx)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

  • Kutajarishta is perfect medicine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), when flatulence and loose stools are main two symptoms.

Chronic Bronchitis & Productive Cough

  • Kutajarishta promotes expectoration and helps clear in the lungs. However, it is rarely used for this purpose, but it can be useful in chronic cases of a productive cough or other lung disorders with a productive cough. It helps easier expectoration and clearing the lungs.
  • Kutajarishta has mild emetic properties and bitter taste, which induces vomiting and expectoration of phlegm in children. However, it is rarely used in ayurvedic practice for these characteristics, but it provides great relief when excess mucus is accumulated in the lungs.

Dosage of Kutajarishta

  • 12 – 24 ml. one or two times a day, usually advised after food. If needed, it can be mixed with equal quantity of water.

Side Effects

  • There are no recorded side effects, however, a very high dose of Kutajarishta may lead to constipation.
